GF/POL/01/004 General information - Project documentation - Stakeholders - Events

Implementation of the GF/POL/01/004 Project is based on the No. 2001/369 Contract signed between the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Institute of Environmental Protection (IEP) in Poland. The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) finances this project. The main objective of the "Enabling activities to facilitate early action on the implementation of the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs)" project is to prepare inventories of threats from use in Poland of hazardous substances (at present and in the past), subject of the Stockholm Convention and to develop the National Implementation Plan. Inventory and programming activities are already conducted in Poland for some time as tasks of the "National Environmental Policy" implementation of the Aarhus Protocol and approximation of Polish regulations of those of the European Union. Within the framework of this project the results of all activities performed so far will be collected, verified and completed under a uniform scheme and a comprehensive national action plan will also be developed. The GEF Management endorsed the GF/POL/01/004 Project in 2001, as result of intensive solicitation by the Secretariat of UNIDO, the Polish Ministry of Environment and the IEP. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the political co-ordination centre for GEF projects in Poland, and the ECOFUND Foundation, as the operational co-ordination centre for those projects, also supported the project proposal. Active participation of Poland in activities of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee and signing the Stockholm Convention by Poland during the Ministerial Conference in May 2001 were favourable for the GEF decision-making process.
